After White plays 1.e4 e5 many players find the Ruy Lopez, also known as the Spanish Opening, the best possibility of creating a lasting advantage for White. The Ruy Lopez is an opening which has been played in numerous encounters between the greatest players on earth such as Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Anatoly Karpov and many, many more.
However, a disadvantage of the great popularity of the Ruy Lopez is the fact that most chess players know the opening very well, and the theory about this opening has developed at a tremendous speed over the last years. Andrew Greet, a British Grandmaster, avoids this potential problem by providing a great repertoire for White, one that can be assimilated into an opening armoury with relative ease.
Greet also points out the typical tactical strategies, ideas and moves for both Black and White, providing the reader with enough knowledge to begin playing the Ruy Lopez.
*Written by a Ruy Lopez expert
*All black defences are covered
*Ideal for improvers, as well as club and tournament players
