Rudolph Spielman was a great supporter of the so-called “Romantic School” which was the most dominant style of chess in the 19th century. Romantic Chess is characterized by open tactical games and brash sacrifices. Winning with style was more important than winning itself, so gambits (the sacrifice of a piece to obtain an attack) were almost always accepted. Spielmann himself really adored the King’s Gambit and comparable aggressive openings. His philosophy on chess could be summed up by his quote: "Play the opening like a book, the middle game like a magician, and the endgame like a machine."

Neil McDonald, an author with many great chess books on his list, looks back at the most beautiful games played by Spielman. Games were opponents are blinded and overwhelmed by Spielman’s aggressive play. A deep insight in the games of this “master of attack” guarantees an entertaining and inspiring book.

Rudolph Spielmann Master of Invention includes Spielmann’s most brilliant sacrificial games and is ideal for the aggressive, attacking-minded chess players. This book is perfect for sharpening tactical ability.
